Mercury, out now.
In a nutshell...
Mr Knopfler in mellow mood.
What's it all about?
Knopfler's sixth studio album.
Who's it by
Mark Knopfler, former frontman of dad-rock supremos Dire Straits.
As an example.
"Before gas and TV/before people had cars/We'd sit round the fires/Pass round a guitar/remembering songs/When my daddy was home/He'd play along/On the spoons and a comb." - Before Gas and TV
What the others say
"A muscular rock album with copious riffage it is most definitely not. But, those who have come to appreciate Knopfler's thoughtful and intelligent songwriting and arrangements are well rewarded by Knopfler's sixth release." - Popmatters.com
So is it any good?
Like a mixture of Richard Hawley and Ralph McTell, former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler has been crafting a niche for himself in the past few years creating folky, rustic music full of hobnails and proletarian grit.
Knopfler is emerging as one of the elder statesmen of British rock and his more recent work has had echos of Bob Dylan's latter albums, but with perhaps a bit more credibility and less disappointment. For where Dylan's later work seems to have a jaded, going-through-the-motions quality to it, Knopfler's appears to be a logical progression from the days when he plied his trade with a Fender Stratocaster.
For the most part, Get Lucky lolls along nicely at a fairly mellow pace. Border Reiver is a promising opening track but the album doesn't really live up the promise.
Those who liked the song Knopfler did for the return of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet will probably enjoy this release.
