Rio Ferdinand will lead England at the 2010 World Cup after replacing John Terry as captain of the national side.
Terry was stripped of the captaincy by Fabio Capello following a 12-minute meeting at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.

In the same statement confirming Terry's departure following allegations about his private life, Capello said current vice-captain Ferdinand was being promoted, with Steven Gerrard moving up to vice-captain.
"When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice," the Italian said. "There is no reason to change this decision."
Terry was sacked as captain following newspaper allegations of an extra-marital affair with the ex-girlfriend of former team-mate Wayne Bridge.
The Football Association left the decision over Terry entirely in Capello's hands.
Ferdinand has suffered an indifferent season so far, however, with his campaign punctuated by poor form, injury and suspension.
