A man has died after sustaining knife wounds in a mass brawl involving more than 40 Asian and white males in Preston.
Clashes broke out between two groups of men in the early hours of this morning in the city's Callon estate, with 20-year-old Shezan Umarji from Fishwick View, Preston, dying later in hospital.
Lancashire police report that as well as knives, bottles and baseball bats were used in the melee, which left four other people injured.
Superintendent Richard Bailey said: "We are treating this as a very serious incident, and we are working with the local community to reassure them, and they are helping us with our inquiries.
"A number of people have been arrested. However, as numerous people were in the vicinity at the time, we are asking them to contact us."
A community race relations advisor representing relatives of Mr Umarji has explained that the family is "deeply shocked by the tragedy", but has "appealed for calm and encouraged members of the community to come forward to help the police if they thought they could".
