Arsenal's sloppy finishing cost them dear on their latest trip to the north as Manchester City's Joey Barton buried his penalty to give the home side a 1-0 victory at Eastlands.
A foul by the inexperienced Justin Hoyte afforded Barton the opportunity to smash home, but Arsene Wenger will be looking for answers as to why his team surrendered the points.
Normally so clinical, Thierry Henry wasted two clear-cut chances, while his strike-partner Robin van Persie and defender Kolo Toure both struck the woodwork as the visitors failed to muster a reply.
Elsewhere Liverpool came from behind to beat West Ham 2-1 at Anfield.
Bobby Zamora's mis-hit cross caught an embarrassed Jose Reina out of position to give the Hammers the lead.
But a 30-yard piledriver from young Norwegian defender Daniel Agger drew the home team level and, just before half-time, Peter Crouch coolly rounded Roy Carroll and slotted home the winner.
Iain Dowie's Charlton won an eventful clash with Bolton 2-0 at the Valley as Marcus Bent grabbed a brace.
While Bent converted a penalty, Bolton had already seen El-Hadji Diouf fail from 12 yards inside the first ten minutes with Scott Carson making a good save.
Both sides were reduced to ten men with Herman Hreidarsson and Kevin Davies receiving marching order for use of the elbow.
Fulham's Jimmy Bullard curled in a fabulous free-kick to cap a dynamic individual performance and secure all three points for Fulham at Craven Cottage.
It was another new signing, Emile Heskey, who proved the difference between Wigan and Reading cooling slotting away a chance for the only goal at the JJB.
