Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Erikkson will be without striker Valeri Bojinov for at least five months after scans showed the 21-year-old has sustained damage to both lateral and anterior ligaments in his knee.
The Bulgarian forward was signed in a £6 million move from Fiorentina over the summer and was only six minutes into his first start in this weekend's Manchester derby when he landed awkwardly after jumping for a header against Patrice Evra.
He subsequently had to be carried from the pitch and City medical staff have now confirmed that he will be missing until well into 2008.
Despite his tender years Manchester City is Bojinov's fourth club since he made his debut for Lecce in the Italian top-flight at the record age of 15 years and 11 months.
After being snapped up by the Viola shortly after, he was loaned to Juventus for the start of last season, but returned to the Florence outfit before being signed by Eriksson.
The former England coach is still relatively well-served in the attacking department with fellow Serie A import Rolando Bianchi currently the preferred targetman in the Eastlands side's frontline.
Darius Vassell, Paul Dickov, Bernardo Corradi and Georgios Samaras, all of whom previously appeared to be on their way out of the club as part of the Swede's expensive rebuilding plans, could now get a chance to push their way back into favour with their new boss.
