Manchester City survived a scare in their Carling Cup tie against Bristol City at Ashton Gate, eventually winning 2-1.
The visitors were in the ascendancy early on and took the lead when Emile Mpenza slotted home after 17 minutes.
Rolando Bianchi hit the post at the start of the second period and City were left to regret the miss when Bradley Orr knocked in a loose ball from Mark McIndoe's free-kick to put the Robins back on level terms.
Bianchi made up for his miss with ten minutes remaining, drilling the ball past Bristol goalkeeper Joe Hart from the edge of the box to put the Premier League outfit into the next round.
Elsewhere Michael Owen scored his first goal for Newcastle United since December 2005 in their 2-0 victory over Barnsley at St James' Park.
The England striker was played in by Shola Ameobi and made no mistake one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Obafemi Martins replaced Owen towards the end of the match and he doubled the Magpies lead with an acrobatic volley with five minutes remaining.
Middlesbrough beat Northampton 2-0 to qualify for the next round of the competition they won in 2004.
The Riverside was half empty and Northampton made Boro work hard for their victory.
The Cobblers' Ian Henderson hit the post with a diving header after Brad Jones failed to hold on to Brad Johnson's fierce drive. 17-year-old Alex Dyer created another chance in the first half but could not beat Jones.
Fabio Rochemback eventually broke the deadlock for Boro after 53 minutes with a stunning 35-yrad free-kick and Dong Gook Lee made sure of the victory 13 minutes later.
