Newcastle United have formally presented Michael Owen with the offer of a new contract to stay at the club beyond next summer.
The England striker, who celebrated his 29th birthday with the Magpies' opening goal of their 3-0 away win against Portsmouth on Sunday, has been rumoured to be keen to leave the club when his current deal runs out.
However, he has recently denied that any formal offer has been made to him about a renewal.
This latest development puts the ball firmly in Owen's court regarding his future as a Newcastle player ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.
It is not known if the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star has been given a time frame in which to sign the new contract, although he is thought to be considering the deal with his advisors before making a decision.
