A wealthy friend of US fraudster Bernard Madoff has been found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool in Florida.

Jerry Picower's death at the age of 67 is being treated as a possible case of drowning, police in the US state have said.

Mr Picower, a philanthropist, has been accused of making more than £4 billion from the fraudulent investment schemes of his friend Madoff, but his legal team claimed he was a victim of the schemes.

His body is believed to have been pulled from his Palm Beach pool by his wife and housekeeper.

He is thought to have been suffering from ill health, including Parkinson's disease.

Madoff is currently serving a 150-year sentence after pleading guilty to running a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.
