Dean Macey of England has established a comfortable lead at the halfway point of the Commonwealth Games decathlon.
A personal best in the shot put and first place in the high jump gave the 28-year-old a 187-point lead over nearest contender Jason Dudley of Australia.
A gutsy performance in the 400m gave Macey a haul of 4,225 points, with Dudley on 4,068 and third-placed Jamaica's Maurice Smith with 4,049.
Also in contention is Dale Garland of Guernsey, who has 4,005 points and sits in fourth place.
Ahead of the competition's opening day Macey was troubled with a slight hamstring complaint, but following an encouraging time of 11.17 seconds in the 100m, he seemed to regain his confidence.
"I'm in a much better position than I imagined myself to be at this stage," Macey said to BBC Sports.
However, he added: "I'm holding back, I'm running at 70 per cent in all the running events."
The athlete explained that he was especially pleased with his throwing, his shot put registering a personal best of 15.83m.
"That shot put result has been a long time coming. It's taken me four years but what a time to do it, when everyone else wasn't throwing well, and in the third round."
