Luton's 89-year stay in the football league came to an end today as a 0-0 draw against Chesterfield saw them relegated from League Two.
The Hatters had almost no chance of escaping relegation after they were forced to start the season on minus 30 points due financial infringements.
Their tally of 13 wins and 15 draws this season would have seen them comfortably in mid-table if they had started the season on level points with all the other teams.
It is a desperately sad end to the season for Luton fans, who only last Sunday celebrated victory in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 3-2 extra time win over Scunthorpe.
Luton manager Mick Harford, who saw his team go down with four games of the season still left, has vowed his team will comeback from this massive blow.
"It was always going to be difficult in terms of where we were with penalty points," Harford told the club's website www.lutontown.co.uk.
"It is the past incumbents of this club who are to blame. I said to the players in the dressing room, look at the clock, remember this time, five to five on April 13, it is the rebirth of Luton Town FC.
"We've never been in this position before but hopefully we'll bounce straight back," added Harford, who also played for Luton.
