Kieron Dyer is facing another spell on the sidelines after a freak training ground accident.
The injury-prone Newcastle United ace suffered an eye injury on Friday morning that will rule him out for a fortnight.
Dyer, 27, had made his first team comeback as a substitute in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Portsmouth in the Carling Cup at St James Park.
The midfielder was expected to feature in Saturday's crucial Premiership clash with struggling Charlton.
Magpies boss Glenn Roeder said the setback sums up Dyer's luck with injuries.
"We immediately took him to see a specialist and his advice was that he needs to rest and not to take part in any contact training for at least two weeks," he told the club's website.
"Kieron doesn't deserve such wretched luck to happen little more than a day after getting back on the pitch against Portsmouth, when for 30 minute he showed the kind of electric pace and ability that we know he's capable of."
"It's such cruel luck to be robbed of his services, but we've just got to stand up and be counted and move forward in a positive way, starting with Charlton."
Dyer, who has 16 full England caps, missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury.
Newcastle will give fitness tests to Obafemi Martins and Nicky Butt for the match with Iain Dowie's side while Emre and Antoine Sibierski are doubts due to injury.
