Liverpool missed the chance to go back to the top of the Premier League after they drew 1-1 at home to Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Steven Gerrard had given the home side the lead with a superb long-range strike in the 68th minute, but Anfield was stunned when Tim Cahill headed in an equaliser with just three minutes to go.
It was a typical derby encounter with little in the way of passing football but plenty of tackles and committed play.
Rafa Benitez had chosen to pair Robbie Keane and Fernando Torres in attack and the Spaniard should have opened the scoring in the first-half when he raced onto a long ball from Sami Hyypia.
Torres looked certain to score when he sold Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard a dummy but somehow managed to strike the outside of the post.
It was by far the best chance of a first-half that was lacking in real quality.
At the other end Liverpool were given warning of Cahill's aerial prowess when he rose to meet a Tony Hibbert cross but Pepe Reina managed to scramble the ball to safety.
The second-half progressed in a similar manner with Everton claiming a penalty for a foul on Victor Anichebe, but their appeals were turned away by referee Howard Webb.
Moments later David Moyes' side fell behind when Gerrard unleashed a low shot from 30-yards which flew past Howard in the Everton goal.
That looked like it would give Liverpool all three points and restore to the summit of the Premier League but with three minutes remaining substitute Yossi Benayoun committed a needless foul on the edge oh his own area.
Mikel Arteta clipped the ball in and Cahill rose to equalise.
The draw means that Liverpool have now drawn five of their 11 home league games and moves them level on points with Manchester United, who have a game in hand on their Lancashire rivals.
