Martin Skrtel will not need surgery on a broken metatarsal but could still miss the rest of the Premier League season, his club Liverpool have confirmed.
The Slovakian defender went off during the Reds' 3-1 Europa League victory over Unirea Urziceni last month, with an X-ray showing he had sustained a broken metatarsal in his right foot.
On Tuesday his club said the 25-year-old would be out for around eight weeks.
"Liverpool have confirmed Martin Skrtel will not require surgery on a broken metatarsal in his right foot - but the defender is expected to be out of action for up to eight weeks," a statement on the Liverpool website said.
"The Slovakia international sustained the injury in a heavy challenge during last Thursday's victory over Unirea Urziceni in Bucharest.
"And an X-ray has revealed Skrtel is facing two months on the sidelines."
Reds manager Rafa Benitez, whose side occupy sixth place in the Premier League with 48 points from 28 games, is already missing defenders Daniel Agger, Fabio Aurelio and Glen Johnson through injury.
