Liverpool remain in touch with fourth-placed Tottenham after a 2-0 win over Bolton at Anfield.
The home side were lucky not to go behind when Chung-Yong Lee went on a weaving run that took him past the Liverpool defence and round Pepe Reina. Sotirios Kyrgiakos managed to get back and clear the ball off the line though.
Dirk Kuyt put Liverpool into lead when Emiliano Insua crossed for Alberto Aquilani who headed the ball across the six-yard box for the Dutchman to poke the ball into the net.
David Ngog should have doubled their advantage after half-time but hit his shot into the ground and off the crossbar from seven-yards out after Jussi Jaaskelainen had parried Steven Gerrard's left footed shot.
Liverpool went 2-0 up soon after though thanks to a Kevin Davies own-goal with Insua's wayward 25-yard effort taking an almighty deflection off the Bolton striker and wrong footing Jaaskelainen to seal victory for Rafa Benitez's side.
Meanwhile, Everton continued their impressive form with a late goal giving them 1-0 win at Wigan.
Neither side were able to take the lead in the first-half, although Everton were left incensed when they were denied a penalty with Stephen Caldwell appearing to drag Louis Saha to the floor in the box.
Cahill headed the winner for Everton in in the final ten minutes though, applying the finishing touch to Leighton Baines' corner to send the Toffees up to ninth in the Premier League.
West Ham are without a win in five games in all competitions after playing out a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers at Upton Park.
After a poor first-half the game came to life after the break. Blackburn should have taken the lead when Jason Roberts when through one on one with Rob Green, however, the West Ham goalkeeper made a fine save to turn the ball round the post.
Allesandro Diamanti then came close to giving West Ham the lead with a curling free-kick that Paul Robinson tipped over his bar.
Neither side could grab a winning goal though and took a share of the points.
