The latest adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol has topped the North American box office despite lower than expected takings.
Starring Jim Carrey, the animated take on the Christmas classic made $31 million this weekend, knocking off Michael Jackson documentary This Is It from the top spot.
But the haul was at the low-end of expectations for Disney, with the movie making just $8,418 per cinema it opened at.
In contrast, low budget indie flick Precious made $1.8 million despite opening at only 18 cinemas - a rate of $100,000 per cinema.
Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire, sees an illiterate, morbidly obese New York teenager pregnant for the second time by her stepfather offered the chance to turn her life around at an alternative school.
