US nu-metal outfit Linkin Park have earned their second UK number one album with Minutes to Midnight, ending Arctic Monkeys' four-week reign at the top of the charts.

The six-strong Californian group got their first number one four years ago with second album Meteora, but neither discs are likely to approach the 15 million-plus sales of debut Hybrid Theory.

Also making a dent on the album chart this week was singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright with Release the Stars at two, while post-punk Welsh group Funeral for a Friend are a place behind with Tales Don't Tell Themselves.

There is a new number one in the singles chart as well, with Rihanna and Jay-Z gatecrashing the top spot with Umbrella based on download sales alone.

Maroon 5's comeback single Makes me Wonder is at two, with Beautiful Liar by Shakira and Beyonce, and Snow Patrol's Signal Fire from the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack, at three and four respectively.

Pop group Hellogoodbye complete the top five with Here (In Your Arms).

Last week's number one holders McFly are nowhere to be seen however, with double-A side Baby's Coming Back/Transylvania speeding down the charts to number 20.

And in yet more chart oddity, Eurovision flops Scooch are still in the top ten at eight with Flying the Flag (For You), a week after being soundly trounced by the musical giants of Serbia and Ukraine in Helsinki.
