Jose-Filipe Lima and Raphael Jacquelin hold a one-shot first round lead at the BMW International Open in Munich.

The 25-year-old Portuguese Lima, who has missed the last six cuts on the European tour this season, brought his season's misfortune to an end by hitting four birdies and an eagle-three to card a seven-under-par 65.

Lima said that his performances had deteriorated this year after making changes to his swing but that today's round had imbued him with confidence.

"I hit a very bad drive on the first hole but in a funny way I think that helped relax me a little bit because I was a little stressed after the way I have been playing," he told the PGA European Tour website.

British hopes in the early stage of the tournament are being led by Paul Broadhurst, with the 41-year-old lying one shot behind the leaders.

Nick Dougherty, who held an early lead in last week's US Open at Oakmont after a superb second-round 66, lies three shots off the lead at four-under.

Colin Montgomerie, who is still searching for an elusive first major victory after missing the cut at Oakmont, pulled out before the start of this week's tournament after falling ill on the journey back to London from the US Open.
