Singer Lily Allen has been awarded substantial undisclosed damages over a newspaper's claim she had made disparaging remarks about the Beckhams.
The Smile star was not at London's High Court to hear the settlement of her libel action against the Sun newspaper for a May 2009 article entitled "Ranting Lily", in which she was alleged to have criticised Victoria and David Beckham, as well as the latter's England team-mate Ashley Cole and his X Factor judge wife Cheryl.
The 24-year-old's lawyer Mark Thomson told Mr Justice Eady the tabloid had claimed Allen had made offensive comments about the footballers and their wives in an interview for French football magazine So Foot.
Mr Thomson explained his client had never been interviewed by or on behalf of So Foot and explained the Sun's publishers News Group Newspapers had accepted the singer did not make the comments attributed to her.
The tabloid's original story had alleged Allen had labelled Victoria Beckham a "monster" and called The X Factor judge Cheryl Cole "stupid and superficial".
The Sun published an apology to the singer last month, stating: "In May we reported in [gossip column] Bizarre that Lily Allen had made various offensive remarks about David and Victoria Beckham and Ashley and Cheryl Cole in an interview with a magazine.
"We now accept that Lily didn't say these things to the magazine and we apologise to Lily for the upset and embarrassment caused by repeating them."
