England seamer Jon Lewis has admitted he will be using this week's third Test against Pakistan at Headingley as a springboard into the Ashes squad.
The Gloucestershire man looks likely to earn his second cap for his country at the home of Yorkshire cricket this Friday, replacing Sajid Mahmood in the starting line-up.
Now he wants to put in a performance against Pakistan which will stick in the minds of the selectors come Ashes time.
"If you get selected for an Ashes tour, it is going to be the pinnacle of your career," Lewis told the Press Association.
"If I'm still in the squad for the last Test against Pakistan at The Oval, obviously there's a fair chance I'll be in the Ashes squad in the winter but I've just got to keep playing well."
Despite playing only one Test so far, against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge in June, he has been consistently named in the squad.
However, the conditions expected at Headingley are likely to suit Lewis' swing and the 31-year-old wants to take his chance if he does get the nod.
"Even though I've played only one Test, I've been in all the squads, which is a good achievement for me and shows if you perform in county cricket you'll get a chance to be in the England squad," Lewis added.
"If you look around the country, there aren't a great deal of people sticking their hand up (to get picked for England) so it is a matter of getting wickets and bowling well."
Lewis also played in the Twenty20 game against Australia last summer, taking four wickets including the wicket of Aussie captain Ricky Ponting.
