A consortium backed by Matt Le Tissier has entered into talks with Southampton's administrators over a possible takeover.
Pinnacle Consortium is said to have been granted exclusive rights to enter into discussions over a deal to acquire the club.
A statement issued by the administrators confirmed the consortium had paid a non-refundable, undisclosed fee to enter into the talks and as a result the club was now in a position to pay its staff wages in full for the month of May.
"The exclusivity agreement will last for 21 days, during which time we will be working hard with the consortium on the technical aspects required to complete the sale, and we will make a further announcement when it is appropriate to do so," the statement reads.
Southampton were relegated to League One this month and will start next season with minus ten points after going into administration.
Le Tissier is the second-highest ever goal scorer at Southampton, scoring 162 times in his 443 appearances for the club between 1986 and 2002.
