Arsenal have been knocked out of the Champions League by a late goal from Brazilian defender Alex.
Trailing 1-0 after the first-leg a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium was not enough to see the English side through.
The centre-half rose to meet a rare PSV corner with seven minutes to go and nodded the ball past Jens Lehmann.
Alex was at the centre of the action all night after helping the Gunners earlier in the half when he scored an own goal after 56 minutes to pull the home side level on aggregate.
The Gunners have had a miserable time in cup competitions of late, having lost the Carling Cup final and being knocked out of the FA Cup by Blackburn last week.
In a relatively quiet first half the Gunners were restricted to long-range efforts from Kolo Toure and Freddie Ljungberg that were dealt with by PSV goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes with relative ease.
Arsenal then upped the tempo in the second half as they searched for the goal they needed to keep their chances alive.
Despite enjoying the bulk of possession the Gunners did not look likely to achieve the breakthrough until Alex put the ball into his own goal following Denilson's corner.
Francesc Fabregas then wasted a chance to add to the lead, shooting over the bar after Alexander Hleb had set him free.
PSV had a legitimate penalty claim waived away after 64 minutes when Denilson knocked down Jefferson Farfan inside the box.
However, the Eindhoven fans did not have long to wait for an equaliser when Alex made up for his earlier error and headed PSV into the quarter-finals, just as the tie looked to be heading for extra-time.
