Andriy Shevchenko scored Chelsea's winning goal two minutes into stoppage time to help them beat Leicester City 4-3 in the Carling Cup fourth round.
The Blues came from behind twice to avoid the shock of the round with moments to spare as the Foxes left Stamford Bridge empty-handed.
Gareth McAuley gave the visitors a surprise lead after just six minutes when he headed home Matt Fryatt's cross.
Chelsea then began to assert themselves on the game and bounced back from going a goal behind with shots from Claudio Pizarro and Steve Sidwell going close.
The Blues were then given reward for their endeavour when Frank Lampard equalised. Juliano Belletti's cross was only cleared as far as the England man and he slotted home.
Lampard was on hand again midway through the first half as Scott Sinclair provided the cross for the midfielder to give his side a 2-1 lead at the break.
Foxes goalkeeper Marton Fulop made two good saves to keep the Championship side in the game at the start of the second period and they proved important when they equalised in the 69th minute.
Substitute DJ Campbell headed home Levi Porter's cross to make it 2-2 and the visitors were sent into raptures when Carl Cort gave them the lead three minutes later.
Belletti fouled Porter and from the resulting free-kick Cort prodded home from short range.
Shevchenko then came to the rescue of Avram Grant's men, scoring twice in the final six minutes.
His first was a sublime effort from 20-yards out. The Ukrainian picked up Michael Essien's pass and smashed it into the top left corner of the goal, leaving Fulop with no chance.
Then, as the match looked to be heading for extra-time, the former AC Milan hitman was on hand to scramble the ball over the line as the Foxes tried desperately to clear a number of scuffed shots to no avail.
