Floyd Landis, the disgraced winner of this year's Tour de France, will learn more on his fate this weekend with the results of his B sample due on Saturday.
The American tested positive for abnormally-high levels for testosterone in the aftermath of his astonishing comeback on stage 17 of the Tour.
If this second test confirms the results of the first, the Phonak rider will face a ban of two years as well as being the first winner to be stripped of his title.
Landis' defence that he naturally produces large amounts of the hormone may have suffered a fatal blow even before the results from sample B are made public, according to reports in the American press.
US newspaper the New York Times today quoted an unnamed official from the race's organisers, the International Cycling Union, claiming that the testosterone found in Landis' body was an artificial type.
Throughout the turmoil the 30-year-old has maintained his innocence, while also saying that he wasn't confident of being cleared.
"All I'm asking for is that I be given a chance to prove that I'm innocent. I would like to be presumed innocent until proven guilty - since that's the way we do things in America," he said last week.
