Chelsea have suffered a major blow ahead of the new season with the news that key midfielder Frank Lampard has broken a toe on his left foot.
According to Sky Sports News, the England star felt discomfort on the first day of the Blues' tour to America almost three weeks ago but the severity of the injury was only revealed today after an X-ray.
The club have yet to confirm the news, but if it is a broken toe then Lampard will not only miss the Community Shield clash against Manchester United on Sunday, but he will most probably also miss the start of the Premiership season.
The 29-year-old has been a vital member of the Chelsea team since his £11 million move from West Ham in 2001. He has won two league titles, two league cups and an FA Cup with the London club.
However, speculation has grown in recent months that Lampard may be on the verge of moving away from Stamford Bridge. He has yet to sign a new contract with Chelsea and has been linked with Barcelona, where his wife is from.
But now it seems that due to this injury Chelsea will keep their midfield stalwart for at least another season.
