Andy Murray has been forced to withdraw from Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against Argentina with a knee injury.
The 20-year-old said the problem became apparent upon his return from the Australian Open and that he has been advised to rest the injury, thus forcing him out of next week's tie.
Murray has been competing on hard courts since the start of the year but the tie in Buenos Aries will be on clay. The Scot's fitness trainer Jez Green claimed the change of surface could make the injury worse.
Britain will now be without their top ranked player for their first outing in the Davis Cup's world group for a number of years.
Murray said he was disappointed not to be taking part but felt the decision would benefit the rest of his season.
He said: "I am very disappointed not to be joining my Davis Cup team-mates in Buenos Aires because I love playing for my country and have always enjoyed the team atmosphere of the Davis Cup."
Ross Hutchins, a doubles specialist, has been selected to replace Murray in the team.
Davis Cup captain John Lloyd said he still had faith that the team could still beat Argentina despite Murray's withdrawal.
He said: "Obviously we're all hugely disappointed that Andy will not be joining us out here in South America but these things happen. Next week's tie will be a massive challenge for us now that we are without our number one player but we will go there and give it everything we've got."
If Great Britain lose against Argentina they will then go into a playoff to remain in the world group next season.
