Roy Keane has received a public apology from Sunderland's largest shareholder Ellis Short, after comments made by Per-Magnus Andersson, an associate of Short.
Andersson, president of Kitano Capital, the American asset management company, made the comments to a Swedish website, and were subsequently reported in the British press.
Short has now moved quickly to distance himself from Andersson's comments.
"The comments reported in a newspaper do not represent me, Drumaville or the Board," Short said in a statement on the official Sunderland website
"For the record, I have nothing but admiration for Roy Keane and am grateful for all he has done for the club and and I wish him well for the future.
"With regards to the future, Niall Quinn and his executive Board are the only people authorised to speak on behalf of the club, and they alone will be responsible for identifying a successor to Roy Keane in due course."
Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Managers' Association, welcomed Short's statement.
"This attack on Roy by Per-Magnus Andersson was completely inaccurate and inappropriate. Im delighted that Ellis Short chose to apologise so promptly.
Keane has accepted Short's apology, and revealed his gratitude to Sunderland for giving him his first managerial opportunity, and also that he intends to return to club management in the future.
"I am grateful to the club, players and fans at Sunderland, and most especially the staff, for their support during my first management appointment.
"I have experienced and learnt a tremendous amount in the last 27 months and enjoyed the rigours of being a manager.
"I look forward to building on those experiences and sometime in the future returning to football management."
