Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet has won £25,000 in libel damages over a newspaper report about her fitness regime.

Representatives of the Revolutionary Road star presented papers to London's high court in May claiming that an article in the Daily Mail had "injured her personal and professional reputation".

A feature article by Daily Mail writer Liz Jones entitled 'Should Kate Winslet win an Oscar for the world's most irritating actress?' had criticised the English actress for allegedly underplaying the amount of exercise she did to stay in shape.

Jones' article was largely based on a quote Winslet had given to Elle magazine in which she said: "I don't go to the gym because I don't have time, but I do Pilates workout DVDs for 20 minutes or more every day at home."

In her legal action against the newspaper, the 33-year-old actress said she had been "distressed and embarrassed" by the unpleasant tone of the article, especially as she is often earmarked as a positive role model for young women.

Winslet, married to Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, accepted £25,000 libel damages from the Daily Mail's publishers, Associated Newspapers, on Tuesday.

In 2007 she accepted an undisclosed settlement from Grazia over allegations she had visited a diet doctor.

The magazine later accepted Winslet had been receiving a consultation about a neck injury.
