Rap star Kanye West has admitted he feels "ashamed" after his already infamous interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV video music awards, following widespread criticism.
The Stronger rapper stormed the stage at the New York ceremony on Monday, taking the microphone from the country singer to say Beyonce should have won the best female video prize instead of Swift.
West has since faced a barrage of criticism for his actions - having interrupted awards ceremonies in the past - and, after apologising to Swift on his blog, appeared on the Jay Leno talkshow to explain himself.
The TV audience erupted in laughter after host Leno jokingly asked West: "Have you had a tough day?"
The 32-year-old replied seriously: "Yeah, it's been extremely difficult."
He added he had been "just dealing with the fact that I hurt someone or took anything away, you know, from a talented artist or from anyone, because I only wanted to help people."
The Golddigger star continued: "My entire life, I've only wanted to give and do something that I felt was right. And I immediately knew in the situation that it was wrong, and it wasn't a spectacle or just - you know, it's actually someone's emotions, you know, that I stepped on."
It has since been reported that Swift's mother "tore into" West backstage after the incidient and West appeared to agree with many of his critics by saying his behaviour was "very... rude, period".
The 32-year-old said he was aware he had crossed the line when "I gave the mic back to her and she didn't keep going."
He added: "I'm just ashamed that my hurt caused someone else's hurt."
West's critics extended to US president Barack Obama, who was quoted off-the-record by a reporter for the ABC network as the hip-hop star a "jackass".
West recently hit the UK number one spot alongside Rihannan and Jay-Z on the latter's single Run This Town.
