Real Madrid forward Kaka has apologised to the club's fans after the big-spending club were knocked out of the Champions League by Lyon.
The Spanish side crashed out Europe's premier club competition after Miralem Pjanic's late equaliser for Lyon, sending the French team through 2-1 on aggregate.
Real Madrid spent £240 million last summer, purchasing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Kaka, but failed to progress beyond the first knockout stage of the Champions League for the sixth consecutive year.
"It is a very hard blow for Real Madrid," said Kaka after the La Liga side's shock defeat.
"The only thing we can do is ask the fans for forgiveness. We all wanted to play the final in the Bernabeu, and we could not achieve it.
"I have overcome many difficult moments in my career. We are going to get past this one together," he told Spanish newspaper Marca.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas added the thought of watching the Champions League final at the Santiago Bernabeu in May, rather than playing in it, is a tough prospect to bear.
"It's hard to digest because it is a competition where we have high hopes, especially for those of us who have been here for a long time. It's a new blow for Real Madrid, but we must recover," he was quoted by Spanish sports daily AS as saying.
"Thinking about the final weighs on our shoulders even more. We must shoulder our share of the blame, but we must be calm because what is said in the heat of the moment may be misinterpreted. We all have a lot of anger and in the dressing room we are all riled up."
