Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards has left her husband, a week after he admitted fathering a child with his ex-mistress.
After repeated denials, Mr Edwards admitted last week he was the father of videographer Rielle Hunter's two-year-old daughter.
Ms Hunter was hired in 2006 to capture Mr Edwards' preparations to run for the Democratic presidential nomination, eventually won by Barack Obama.
The revelation came as a former aide to Mr Edwards prepares to publish a book on the adultery.
In the book, Andrew Young reportedly claims he was asked to fake a DNA test and claim paternity to help cover-up Mr Edwards's adultery.
The affair was made public in 2006 and despite suffering from inoperable cancer, Mrs Edwards continued to actively campaign on behalf of her husband.
A statement released by Mrs Edwards' publicist at Random House, which published her book Resilience last year said the 60-year-old was now "moving on with her life" and wanted "to put this difficult chapter behind her".
The statement went on to criticise what Mrs Edwards described as "falsehoods and exaggerations" in Mr Young's book.
She added she had believed Mr Young to be the father of Ms Hunter's child until her husband confessed his paternity to her.
