A typhoon has swept through Japan killing at least two people and casing widespread damage.

More than 20,000 people were evacuated in the wake of Typhoon Melor on Thursday.

The storm hit south-west Tokyo tearing roofs from house and flooding major roads. Some 40 people are so far reported to have been injured as a result.

Winds of up to 123 mph had been recorded but the typhoon weakened slightly as it made its way across the main island of Honshu.

Meterologists have warned of continuing heavy rainfall and the danger of mudslides.

Hundreds of commercial flights have been cancelled as a result of the typhoon while major transport links were suspended.

Two men, aged 54 and 69, were killed in separate incidents - the former when his motorbike struck a tree felled by the storm and the latter when a broken branch fell on him.
