World number one Jelena Jankovic has been dumped out of the Zurich Open after losing to Flavia Pennetta in the second round.
Jankovic, who had won her last 12 matches in a run which had seen her win three back-to-back tournaments, seem to tire badly as the match went on and eventually lost 5-7 6-3 6-3.
Things looked to be going according to plan for Jankovic as she dominated the first set and broke Pennetta twice to take it 7-5. She did however look to hurt her left wrist towards the end of the opening set.
The Serbian star then suffered a heavy fall at the start of the second set which caused her right knee to start bleeding. The fall took Jankovic out of her stride and a number of wayward shots from the world number one gifted Pennetta with two breaks, which saw the Italian easily take the second set.
Jankovic beat Pennetta on route to winning the Kremlin Cup last week and had an overall 6-0 record against the 26-year-old. But Jankovic saw that unbeaten record go today as Pennetta crucially broke when 4-3 up in the decider and then served out to take the match.
"I had no gas left in the tank," said Jankovic. "I am not a robot and after winning three titles in different time zones and climates I felt mentally and physically tired.
"But I will have two weeks off now to rest and train for the WTA Championships and hopefully end the year in the best possible way."
