Jelena Jankovic underlined her grandslam-winning potential with a convincing 6-3 6-2 victory in a first round tie with lga Savchuk of the Ukraine.
The Serbian showed the kind of form which took her to the semi-finals of the French Open earlier in the summer, weighing in with some scintillating winners in a mostly one-sided contest.
Savchuk was able to break Jankovic's serve only once during the match, Jankovic's first after a two week break.
Jankovic said of the start to her tournament: "I had a slow start in the beginning and I couldn't find my rhythm. But then I cruised through the match.
"I feel ready to play this tournament. I'm not tired like I was maybe last year around this time."
Jankovic grabbed the headlines at last year's Wimbledon, winning the mixed doubles crown with Andy Murray's brother, Jamie.
She has so far failed to capitalise on good progress in grandslams, having gone out at the semi-final stage four times in her career.
