Comic book adaptation Iron Man has been voted the best film of the year ahead of The Dark Knight by inthenews.co.uk readers.

The Marvel movie, starring Robert Downey Jr, smashed box office expectations earlier this year by taking an estimated $101 million (£69.6 million) in the US and Canada in its opening weekend.

And though DC Comics film The Dark Knight has smashed global box office records, topped several other end-of-year polls and earned a Golden Globe nomination for the late Heath Ledger, readers of inthenews.co.uk preferred the exploits of Tony Stark in Iron Man.

The Jon Favreau film took 23.4 per cent of the vote - with The Dark Knight on 21.5 per cent - to top the inthenews.co.uk poll.

Black comedy In Bruges, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, finished in a surprising third place with Juno and Wall-E completing the top five.

And though it has recently become the most successful film of all time at the UK box office, Mamma Mia! was less of a hit with users of inthenews.co.uk than Oscar winners There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men.

The top ten films of the year are:

1 Iron Man
2 The Dark Knight
3 In Bruges
4 Juno
5 Wall-E
6 There Will Be Blood
7 No Country For Old Men
8 Tropic Thunder
9 Mamma Mia!
10 Quantum of Solace
