Sarah Palin has risked the wrath of John McCain by reopening the debate over her $150,000 wardrobe, courtesy of the Republican party.
It emerged last week that Mrs Palin had received clothes from Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, paid for by campaign donations, since being chosen as Mr McCain's running-mate.
Under US election law, it is illegal to use campaign money to purchase items for personal use.
The Republicans have already insisted that items of clothing that were the wrong size would be returned after the White House race was concluded, with the remainder being donated to charity.
Despite reportedly being instructed by Mr McCain's campaign team to avoid discussing the $150,000 wardrobe, Mrs Palin could not hold back at a rally in Tampa, Florida.
"This whole thing with the wardrobe, you know I've tried to just ignore it because it's so ridiculous," she said.
"But I'm glad now that [it's been brought up] because it gives me an opportunity without the filter of the media to get to tell you the whole clothes thing.
"Those clothes, they are not my property; just like the lighting and the staging and everything else that the [Republican party] purchases, I'm not taking them with me, I'm back to wearing my own clothes from my favourite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska."
Mrs Palin continued to champion the frugality of her family, saying her wedding ring was a $35 purchase from Hawaii.
