United Nations envoy Ibrahim Gambari has met with detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi during his latest visit to the country.
The diplomats visit to the south-east Asian country comes after the military junta announced a roadmap towards democratic elections in 2010 last month.
A referendum on amending the constitution is also set to take place this May, according to a previous statement by the government.
Mr Gambari has been liaising with officials from the regime as well as the opposition ever since a violent crackdown on Buddhist monks protesting against the government last year.
Discussions about the opposition's involvement in the forthcoming polls are currently ongoing in the country.
Details of the discussion between the diplomat and the detained politician, who has been under house arrest for 12 of the last 18 years, are yet to be released. But the AFP news agency reports the country's state broadcaster denouncing the envoy's meeting with the opposition activist.
The news agency quotes the country's information minister as accusing Mr Gambari of bias in favour of Ms Kyi and claims that he had moved beyond his role as a mediator.
Ms Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy, won elections in 1990 but has never been allowed to form a government.
