Typhoon Nuri has struck Hong Kong closing down the majority of the city, including its financial markets.
The storm brought hurricane-force winds and heavy rain in some of the worst weather to descend on the Chinese territory for over a decade.
Flight have been delayed, school and offices closed while bus and ferry services have been suspended.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued a level-nine storm warning for the first time since 2003, telling residents that winds are likely to increase in strength and calling for people to stay indoors.
Typhoon Nuri slammed into Hong Kong at around 09:00 BST this morning with winds of up to 150kmph recorded.
Chinese media said around 250,000 people were evacuated from coastal regions in the Guangdong province.
Landslides and flooding caused by the typhoon led to the deaths of seven people in the Philippines, including at least three children.
More typhoons are expected in the region before the end of the season in December.
