Italian police have begun investigations into the death of a British exchange student who was killed on Fiday.
A post mortem is being conducted on the body of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, from south London, with police hoping to find clues to trace the suspected murderer.
Ms Kercher's body was found in her bedroom with signs of stab wounds to the neck. Her room was locked from the inside and media reports state that the window of her room had been shattered.
A mobile phone belonging to the student, who was in Perugia for a year as part of her degree, was also found in the garden.
Police sources have revealed that Ms Kercher had returned to her home in the Umbrian town by herself after watching a film at a friend's house.
Two of her housemates, all of whom are women, discovered the front door to their house ajar when they came back the following morning. The housemates forced open the door to her room soon later and found the body of the student from the University of Leeds.
Tributes to Ms Kercher have already appeared on her profile on social networking website Facebook.
A fellow University of Leeds student wrote: "You will be remembered always, an angel among all of us."
Another tribute read: "Rest in peace Meredith. What a tragedy you will never be forgotten."
