Barack Obama has denied likening Sarah Palin to a pig wearing lipstick and accused the Republicans of "phoney, foolish diversions".
The Illinois senator came under fire after he said John McCain and his running-mate Mrs Palin's new-found mantra of change was like 'putting lipstick on a pig'.
It led to a new television advert being issued by Mr McCain's campaign team claiming Mr Obama's remarks were directed against Alaska governor and self-confessed 'hockey mom' Mrs Palin herself.
The Republicans reacted to Mr Obama's remarks as they seemed to echo the standout moment of their convention last week, when Mrs Palin joked that the only difference between a 'hockey mom' and a pitbull was lipstick.
But speaking in Virginia, Democratic presidential nominee Mr Obama accused the Republican party of promulgating "made up controversy".
"What their campaign has done this morning is the same game that has made people sick and tried of politics in this country," Mr Obama said.
"They have seized on an innocent remark, tried to take it out of context and thrown up an outrageous ad.
"Every four years this is what we do," Mr Obama continued, accusing the Republicans of "phoney, foolish diversions".
"Who loses at the end of the day? It's you - the American people.
"Enough! I don't care what they say about me, I love this country too much to let them take over another election with phoney lies.
"Enough is enough. These are serious times and they call for a serious debate about where we need to take the nation, we can't take another four years that are like the last eight.
"Spare me the phoney outrage, the phoney talk about change."
In his speech yesterday which offended the Republicans, Mr Obama had said: "We've been talking about change when we were up in the polls and when we were down in the polls.
"The other side, suddenly, they're saying 'we're for change too.' Now think about it, these are the same folks that have been in charge for the last eight years.
"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig. You can wrap up an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change. It's still going to stink after eight years. We've had enough."
