Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton held unannounced talks in Washington on Thursday evening.

The meeting was the first since Mr Obama declared victory in the race to become the Democratic nominee for the White House.

A joint statement released by the candidates claimed: "Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November."

Earlier on Thursday, Ms Clinton sent an email to supporters pledging her support for Mr Obama against presumptive Republican candidate John McCain.

"I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic party's nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise," Ms Clinton said.

"This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans."

Ms Clinton is expected to bow out of the Democratic race during a speech on Saturday.

"I will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise," she said yesterday.

The New York senator has continued to distance herself from speculation regarding running as vice-president alongside Mr Obama.

And Mr Obama himself has also refused to be drawn on whether he will offer the role to Ms Clinton.
