The murderers of a British couple who endured a five-day ordeal of torture have been jailed for life by a Spanish court.
Jorge Real <DN123>Sierra</DN123> and Jose Antonio Velazquez Gonzalez, both Venezuelan, were sentenced to 62 and 54 years behind bars respectively for the abduction and murder of Anthony and Linda O'Malley in 2002.
They had posed as estate agents in order to lure the couple from Llangollen in Wales to a villa in Portugal, where Linda O'Malley was threatened with a cattle prod while her husband was forced to withdraw nearly £20,000 from a cash machine.
For five days they were held at the villa before Ms O'Malley died of a heart attack caused by shock. The two men then suffocated Mr O'Malley to death using a plastic bag before their bodies were found in a cellar.
After a five-day trial last month in Alicante, Spain, the two murderers were today sentenced to life terms, judgements welcomed by members of the O'Malley family.
They said the efforts they had made to help police investigations had "today paid off" but said they could not forgive the "evil doings" of the O'Malley murderers.
"It's what we were looking for," they said. "I personally don't get any pleasure from seeing people locked up for a long time but in this case I can hand on heart say that this pair really were cruel and vindictive."
