Inside Elisabeth Fritzl's cellar prison

Monday, 28 Apr 2008 18:58
Police have admitted they may be investigating Austria's worst-ever crime
Police have released pictures of a cellar in the town of Amstetten, Austria, that was one woman's prison for 24 years.

Cellar entranceElisabeth and three of her children – who had never seen daylight until this weekend - were kept hidden from the outside world by this door, with Mr Fritzl the only person to know the electronic code which unlocked it.

His daughter and the children aged between five and 19 were released when Elisabeth's eldest daughter Kerstin was admitted to hospital.

After watching a television appeal for the 19-year-old's mother to come forward, Mr Fritzl appears to have finally relented to his daughter's wish and set her free.

It is thought that Rosemarie Fritzl, Mr Fritz's wife and Elisabeth's mother, was unaware her daughter and three of her grandchildren were living beneath their home for almost a quarter of a century.

Police believe Mrs Fritzl thought her daughter had run away 24 years ago, despite three of her children living in the family home.
