US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has fractured her elbow in a fall, officials have confirmed.
Mrs Clinton fell on Wednesday while on her way to the White House and was initially taken to the George Washington University hospital to receive treatment.
She has since been released and is expected to have surgery in the coming weeks.
A spokeswoman for the state department confirmed the incident and said the secretary of state was hoping to return to work soon.
"Secretary Clinton appreciates the professionalism and kindness she received from the medical team who treated her this evening and looks forward to resuming her full schedule soon," Cheryl Mills said yesterday.
Mrs Clinton was appointed secretary of state by current president Barack Obama following the pair's long drawn-out battle for the Democratic candidacy for the White House last year.
