US Democratic senator Edward Kennedy has a malignant brain tumour
Influential US Democratic senator Edward Kennedy has a malignant brain tumour, doctors have confirmed.

Mr Kennedy, 76, was taken to the Massachusetts General Hospital over the weekend after suffering a seizure.

The BBC reports that doctors found a tumour in Mr Kennedy's left parietal lobe during tests.

His family are reported to be with him in hospital but no official statement has been released.

The senator is the youngest brother of assassinated president John F Kennedy and senator Robert F Kennedy.

In 1980 he ran an unsuccessful campaign against the incumbent president Jimmy Carter for the Democratic candidacy.

Since then he has become an influential member of the party and in 2006 was named by Time magazine as one of America's 10 best senators.End of story
