Coroner releases Woolmer's body

Tuesday, 24 Apr 2007 08:57
Woolmer's death has shocked cricket
The body of murdered Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer has been released by the coroner, according to Jamaican police.

The 58-year-old's body had been held in the Caribbean pending an autopsy, which has since been completed.

His body is expected to be returned to his family, who live in Cape Town, South Africa.

An inquest into Woolmer's death has been ordered but has since been delayed indefinitely after "significant developments" in the case, although a more specific reason is yet to be given.

It is thought that the former coach, also an ex-England international cricketer, had been poisoned or strangled although no definitive description of why he died has been settled upon as yet.

Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room on the morning of March 18th, the day after his Pakistan side had been eliminated from the World Cup following a shock defeat to Ireland.

Several investigators and senior police figures have travelled to Jamaica to assist local police with their enquiries – including a team of four officers from the UK, a forensics team sent by Interpol and a Pakistani senior investigator.

CCTV images from the hotel on the night of Woolmer's death have also been sent to Scotland Yard for analysis, although there has been no announcement of any conclusive evidence being turned up by the enquiry so far.

The death of the Pakistan coach has thrown a shadow over the cricket World Cup in West Indies, which is now at the semi-final stage.

The final is scheduled for this Saturday and is likely to feature some kind of tribute to Woolmer.End of story
