Paula Radcliffe will miss the London Marathon after breaking a toe while training in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The 35-year-old had been suffering from ganglion on the same foot, which causes swelling around the tendons and joints, and it is thought this led to Radcliffe breaking her toe.
Radcliffe, who has missed the last three London Marathons due to injuries and taking a break to have a child, is now contemplating surgery to fully correct the toe.
"I am desperately disappointed especially as I was looking forward to running in front of the amazing crowds of spectators in London," said Radcliffe.
"I am considering surgery to get myself totally healthy as soon as physically possible and ultimately prevent the bunion causing any future problems."
Radcliffe has won the London Marathon on three occasions but has been absent from her favourite race since winning the event in 2005. The marathon world record holder now faces a race against time to be fit for the World Championships in Berlin in August.
She had a similar fitness race last year when she was forced to recover from a hip injury and a broken leg in order to compete at the Beijing Olympics. Radcliffe took part in the marathon but finished in a disappointing 23rd position.
