Everton scored two late goals to claim a stunning away victory over German side Nuremberg in the Uefa Cup this evening.
Substitute Victor Anichebe was the catalyst for the Everton win as he first won a penalty which Mikel Arteta converted and then he scored to secure the win.
The scoreline slightly flattered the Toffees as both teams were very evenly matched and Nuremberg created enough chances to win the game. Everton's best chance of the first half came in the opening minute of the game when Tim Cahill saw his shot deflected onto the post.
A mistake from defender Joleon Lescott gave the home side a golden opportunity to take the lead. Lescott gave the ball away and Ivan Saenko had a clear run in on goal but Tim Howard came out of his goal to stop Saenko from scoring.
Nuremberg lifted the tempo of the game and could have scored on two occasions. First Peer Kluge saw his thunderous effort on goal just go inches wide of the Everton goal and then Howard was forced into making a good save from Dominik Reinhardt's shot.
Everton had a wonderful chance to go in at half time in the lead but Yakuba somehow managed to miss from only four yards out.
The second half was less exciting but as the game looked to be heading for a goalless draw, David Moyes replaced Yakubu with Anichebe and he changed the game.
The 19-year-old first powered his way inside the Nuremberg penalty box and was dragged down by Leandro Glauber. The impressive Arteta slotted home the spot kick.
Anichebe then scored a goal all of his own making as another powerful run led him to outside the Nuremberg box and this time he finished well to cap off a notable individual performance.
