Iain Dowie has been confirmed as the new manager of Hull City following the shock sacking of Phil Brown earlier this week by the Premier League strugglers.

The 45-year-old has been working for Sky Sports News since leaving his brief tenure as assistant to Alan Shearer at Newcastle United last season.

Joining the former Northern Ireland international at Hull will be ex-Southampton manager Steve Wigley and England and Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Tim Flowers.

A brief statement on the Hull City website said: "Hull City AFC is delighted to confirm Iain Dowie as the Club's new manager. Iain will be assisted at the KC Stadium by Tim Flowers and Steve Wigley."

Dowie has previously managed Crystal Palace, Charlton and most recently QPR, although he was sacked after just 15 games at Loftus Road.

Brown was sacked on Monday after four years in charge following a 2-1 home loss to Arsenal which left the Tigers second-from-bottom with 24 points from 29 games.

Burnley are in 18th with the same number of points from 30 games, while Wolves and West Ham United occupy the places immediately above the relegation zone with 27 points from 29 games.

Wigan complete the list of clubs likely to be dragged into a relegation dogfight with 28 points from 30 games.
