Andy Murray has retaliated to comments made by Novak Djokovic by insisting he deserves his newly acquired world number three ranking.
Djokovic, who Murray overtook at number three, claimed the ranking system was "cruel" after seeing his ranking slip despite reaching three Masters Series finals in a row.
The British number one though hit back by making it clear that he had a brilliant start to the season, in which he won three titles, including the Masters Series event in Miami when he beat none other than Djokovic in the final.
"There always seem to be problems (with Djokovic) and now it's obviously the rankings," Murray said after his win over Tommy Robredo at the Madrid Masters.
"It's great that Novak's done well the last few weeks but the first three or four months of the year I played a lot better than him so I think the rankings reflect very well how the guys are playing.
"Until this week I've never heard anyone complain. I think maybe only in the last week it's become a problem for Novak."
This isn't the first time Djokovic has been riled by his and Murray's ranking.
At the Australian Open when Murray was labelled the favourite by the media, the Serb exploded at a journalist for mentioning this by repeating his ranking was higher than Murray's, so he should be more of a favourite.
