A stunning goal from Ben Watson six minutes from time gave Wigan Athletic a 1-0 win over Hull City at the JJB Stadium.
The winger lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Matt Duke to move the Latics into seventh spot and leave the Tigers four points off the drop zone.
And Steve Bruce's men will feel they fully deserved their victory after creating a hatful of chances. They made an explosive start and should have taken an early lead with Maynor Figueroas cross floated onto the post, before the striker headed wide minutes later.
Charles N'Zogbia's drive was then beaten away by Duke, and the Tigers shot-stopper was on hand to keep out Ben Watson's 30-yard volley in the next attack.
The Wigan onslaught continued with Mido being the latest to try his luck with a shot that flew over, before the Egyptian scuffed an effort from seven yards out with the goal at his mercy.
Phil Brown's men improved after the break and came close to breaking the deadlock when Manucho's glancing header was saved by Chris Kirkland, while Richard Garcia then headed over from Geovanni's cross.
Watson came agonisingly close to giving the home side the lead when his shot from the edge of the box flew into the side-netting. They went even closer in the dying minutes when Hugo Rodallega's header rattled the post.
And their dominance was finally rewarded on 84 minutes when Watson capitalised on a poor punch from Duke and lobbed the ball over the keeper into an empty net.
Hull offered little in the closing minutes to slump to another defeat which stretches their recent record to one win in their last 13 games.
